The famous Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet has become synonymous with the city of Canberra and stands on Lake Burley, in central Canberra. Celebrating the historic voyage of Captain Cook in the late 18th century, when he discovered this part of Australia, the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet is an enormous jet of water, reaching up to a staggering 150 metres / 490 feet high. One of the most popular ways to view the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet up close is by steam-paddle boat cruises, which depart at regular intervals nearby.

Canberra's famous New Parliament House is the seat of local government and is also one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Situated in the central Capital Hill district of Canberra, New Parliament House has magnificent architecture, including 48 classical marble pillars which represent a eucalyptus forest, grand arches, stone carvings and many detailed features.

Home to a vast interior, housing important collections of paintings, portraits, antique furniture and interesting collections of Canberra artefacts, other attractions at New Parliament House include regular guided tours, a bookshop selling souvenirs and landscaped gardens. Canberra's New Parliament House was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, as part of the elaborate bicentennial celebrations in Canberra.

Old Parliament House was home to the Australian Federal Parliament from 1927, until it was replaced by the New Parliament House on Capital Hill in 1988. Canberra's Old Parliament House is located in central Canberra, just 3 km / 2 miles from the city centre, and was only ever intended as a temporary parliament house building. With regular guided tours lasting around one hour and self-guided tours with information sheets, attractions at the Old Parliament House include the Prime Ministers Office, the Corridors of Power, the House of Representatives Chamber and the National Portrait Gallery.
